Over our years of coaching pediatric dental practices, we have learned that doctors who are not performing leadership actions often experience higher stress levels and lower profitability, which results in poor functioning systems and teamwork. Here are 5 actions doctors can practice to become great leaders:

Continuously evaluate: Strive to improve systems, efficiency, & team members.

Create an excellent support system: Find successful professionals who are willing to share their knowledge, and whom you can meet with regularly or call for advice when needed.

Cultivate a healthy practice culture: A doctor’s behavior is what defines the culture and sets the standard of the practice. Having a healthy working environment means that team members can communicate openly and honestly, express different opinions without fear, employees are comfortable taking ownership of mistakes, praise and support of each other is shared daily, gossip is not tolerated, employees are held accountable for their behavior, and problem patients/parents are dismissed from the practice.

Share practice vision with the team: The probability of success increases when all team members are working toward a common goal.

Build strong fiscal management skills:  Manage finances both within the practice and personally can help business continue to grow. Follow steps such as creating an annual business plan with goals that are monitored regularly, utilizing reports in practice management software, updating fees annually, and saving for retirement early and regularly.
